Our children need to be heard, when they tell us that they want to stop doing something.

Our children need to be heard, when they tell us that they want to stop doing something. It shows them that we respect them and are concerned for their mental health.
It’s a skill we all need to use, as adults. Let’s work hard to listen and respond to our children’s wishes so that they can understand and use the vocabulary as adults.

As Christmas day approaches, I think it is important for adults to be reminded about consent

As Christmas day approaches, I think it is important for adults to be reminded about consent. This is about trusting our children to decide how and with whom they will share their affection. Affection should never be forced from a child as they will learn that they cannot speak up about what happens to them when an adult approaches them.
I particularly love the final line of this article “If an adult gets offended because a child doesn’t kiss them or want to be near them, then really it’s up to the adult to address these feelings of abandonment, not the child to make it better.”
Enough said.

Is your child anxious about Christmas?

Christmas plays are upon us! Children are under a lot of pressure at this time of year- to dress up, to learn words, to attend parties, to have a different routine, to meet up with unfamiliar relatives and to be good. Not all our children are excited! For some children, this time of year can make them very anxious.
Worried about your child’s anxiety? Struggling to access support? Call me for a chat on 07746756871 or email me at

Supporting a child who may be dealing with grief

The death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth provides us with an opportunity to think about how we talk to children about grief.
Many adults feel the need to ‘soften’ the news by saying “They’ve gone to live with the angels” or “They will be watching over us.”
Experience has shown me that children are way more resilient than we think, and just need death to be explained to them honestly and in language they can understand. They need to ask questions and they need to be allowed to grieve, in the same way as adults do. Attempts to soften the news for them can be very confusing and unhelpful. Have a read of this article from Child Bereavement UK.
Queen Elizabeth taught all of us so much but gave us the perfect opportunity to talk to our children about loyalty, dignity, privacy and fulfilling promises. Surely teaching our children about these things is one of the most powerful things we can do to honour the life of Queen Elizabeth?
Please let me know if you would like support for your child who may be grieving for a special person. Call me for a free ten minute chat! 07746756871 or email me at
